67-69 ENGINES CODES
- THE BLOCK
Identify an engine block is very simple. Codes are entered, or rather "hit" on the front right of the cylinder block (passenger side), close to the cylinder head gasket plane. Often it isn't visible at first glance either because it can be hidden by rust, paint or the air conditioning compressor support. Few centimeters below, near the timing cover, is a code identifying the division of General Motors, year, place of assembly and the last 6 digits of the VIN of the car. On 6-cylinder engines, these codes are located on the cylinder block below the spark plugs.

Every block has a code date of manufacture at the foot of the ignition distributor. It consists of a letter (A = January, B = February ... L = December) and two or three-digit day of the month, the last being the year. Example: D038 -> April 3, 1968. This is to match the casting number in the table above not to be confused with the 70.
