FIRE AM (1977-80), by Herb Adams

  Why Am Fire? It is simply a contraction Firebird and America. Pontiac engineers began their test on a 76 T/A. What purpose? That of having a car engine/chassis equipment powerful enough to be able to feel the track resinous.

                       

                      

       

  Here, a 1979 Road Race version approved the Fire Am lowered suspension, Goodyear GT Radial tires, aluminum rims WS6 package, subframe connectors, a strong 455 HO engine, manual Dough Nash 4+1 transmission, RECARO seats and battery relocated in the trunk... Specific decoration on the hood. Any T/A owner could customize his own Firebird with Fire Am kits VSE (very special equipment) that were available from Herb Adams, former engineer of research and development at PONTIAC who invented the WS6 option.

   

                   

  In addition to lowering the center of gravity with suspension droppage, the "sub-frame" was directly welded to the hull still downward ground clearance by removing silent blocks, more than an inch! Reinforcements connected the firewall to the wishbone. rigid Level could not be better. A roll cage was sitting in the cockpit.

                   

                           

 

SLEEK SILVER Trans Am RACER

  Cette T/A construite pour la saison 1979 de SCCA était dotée d'une carrosserie complètement en fibre de verre à l'exception du toit qui reste en tôle. Son poids tourne autour des 1050kg. Le moteur à injection et carter sec est un 366ci (6.0 litres) ayant pour base le 301ci. Caractéristiques: 4,15"x3,58" - 590 HP@7500rpm - 460lb-ft@5000rpm (620Nm). La garde au sol est de 4" soit 101mm. Les échappement sorte juste devant les portières.

                   

  Malheureusement, une semaine avant la première course de la saison, l'organisation autorisa les Porsche à utiliser les turbos qui avaient ainsi un potentiel de 650-700cv, du coup la Sleek Silver faisait pâle figure avec sa centaine de chevaux en moins. Herb Adams parlait d'utiliser un compresseur GM 6-71 pour assurer la compétitivité des oiseaux d'argent. Il fut même évoquer la conjonction avec un turbo.
